Welcome to the BrainBreak Initiative Page

Are you a high school student?

In an AP, IB, Dual-Enrollment, or advanced science class?

What Are BrainBreaks?

The term BrainBreaks is derived from the practice of incorporating short periods of mindfulness and mental rest into class time, allowing students to recharge and maintain healthy energy levels. These breaks typically last between one and five minutes and are implemented every one to two class periods, depending on the students’ age group and academic level.

Types of BrainBreaks

1

Physical

Students are encouraged to walk around the room respectfully and stretch to promote healthy blood flow and improve focus and alertness.

2

Social

Students are allowed to pause from intense academic focus and reset their minds through mindfulness activities, deep breathing, or quiet reflection, helping to reduce stress and improve concentration.

3

Mental

Students encouraged positive interaction among students through brief conversations or collaborative activities, strengthening communication skills and creating a more connected classroom environment.

Why Should I Take This Survey?

This policy would require teachers in AP and college-level courses, such as AP Chemistry and AP Physics, to include a short, structured break during class, typically lasting 2–3 minutes, with the final timing determined by student and faculty feedback. These breaks would be required during extended or double periods.
